The dock at Fengdu has more than 300 steps, and during winter, the surface might be slightly slippery. Sunsets are another practical thing to plan for in winter. The sun goes down close to 5:30–6:00pm in December, and the ship usually has two dinner sittings in the main dining room, at 6:00pm and 7:30pm. I always choose the second sitting — this gives you a full 40 minutes to watch the golden light hit the gorges from the upper deck or your private balcony.

That particular hour is also the best time to photograph the ship's wake and the layered limestone silhouettes. Speak to your cabin steward about reserving the spa lounge if you need.

One final tip: consider booking a "winter sunrise" option on the ship, if available. Some luxury labels now offer a 6:30am guided meditation or stretching class on the top deck, followed by warm ginger tea. It's a wonderful way to experience the Three Gorges.
